About

Kodo Next Generation

In 2017, Kodo’s Ryotaro Leo Ikenaga made his directorial debut at EC Theatre with “Kodo Next Generation,” a dynamic work featuring an energetic cast of the ensemble’s newest members. The young performers created their own performance filled with passionate intent to uphold the essence of Kodo that was passed down to them by past generations.

On seeing the premiere of Kodo Next Generation at EC 2017, celebrated stage director Ariane Mnouchkine, founder of French theatrical troupe Théâtre du Soleil, offered to host the production in Paris. The following year, the work made its foreign debut at Festival Paris l’Été in July 2018 with five sold out performances at Théâtre du Soleil. Off the back of this successful season, the energetic cast of young Kodo members returns to the stage in Japan with new spirit and force.
