Once a year, a spectacular phenomenon occurs that can only be seen on Sado Island: the entire Kodo ensemble on the same stage! The all-star cast will appear in full force at the festival’s finale to add even more good vibrations to the weekend. With more than double performers of their usual theater cast, you’re sure to feel the power and sound of Kodo resonate deep within you long after the final beat. It’s a celebration of the Earth, humans, and art that connects the two!

Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form.

Since the group’s debut at Berliner Festspiele in 1981, Kodo has given over 6,000 performances in 50 countries on five continents. The ensemble has also participated in a wide range of projects and events, which includes headlining major international festivals, contributing to motion picture soundtracks, and collaborating with a wide variety of global performing arts leaders. Kodo invited Kabuki luminary Tamasaburo Bando to the ensemble artistic director from 2012 through 2016.

Kodo launched Earth Celebration in 1988 and every year since the ensemble has welcomed guest artists from around the world to Sado Island for unprecedented musical and cultural collaborations. This yearly infusion of energy and sound is an essential source of inspiration for Kodo’s ever-evolving creative activities.
